I have seen websites grow from a few thousand visitors a month to huge mass of millions a month and the problems remain the same every where. For the Marketing- web master who understand Tags and have implemented it on their website, they can understand the pain of managing a huge set of tags to segment & track those unique visitors. The more products, campaigns, tracking, features you role out... the more tags you would need and each tag you add will drastically hit your page load time. if you haven't yet considered a TMS (Tag Management System) this is your time to do it.
Ideally a lot of marketing time is spent in IT bottlenecks while launching new products / campaigns, tracking unique features, usability, behavior for creating tags and also ensuring the huge set of tags you have previously implemented is still sane. If you have been using analytics, Adwords, Adsense, SEM, Social Tracking ...Tags have to be coded at the back-end and which can impact your Pageload time if not loaded asynchronously. Its nightmare to see visitors abandoning your page just because it takes too long to load and for the competition its an easy catch. If coding the tag is something which your IT has to do for your website... you have lost some more crucial time before you launch that ‘Special Sale’ campaign and you might end up loosing your marketing budgets next time around.
Here is the solution
With the TMS in place you would now be able to manage your entire set of Tags from a single interface. Saves a lot of your precious time in co-ordination with IT, Vendors & Management/ deployment time

| Typical Tag Management Workflow |
Replace your entire set of code with a single line of code from the TMS you use. Select a TMS which will load Asynchronously and not impact page load time. If you have a Flash based website or you have complex applications..some TMS’s can also manage your Flash & application tags too.
This is how it will work after your TMS is set up.

Besides if you have beautiful Website with a lot of flash on it... This will save a lot of your coding time. Other applications running on your website need coding in their proprietary language which might give your IT guy the thrills but the marketing manager will certainly not be in it for the coding adventure.
Whats in the Market
Either you can custom build a Tag Application if you are a large company and you have the necessary budgets and resources at your disposal. Or you can just google up a few TMS available in the market. I recently came accross Ensighten there will be other products in the market however Ensighten accomplishes most of the tasks which i would ideally expect from a TMS.
